Our Story
Four acres. One family. One grape worth protecting.
MM Rooted Ventures began on a four-acre farm at Manavalan Manimekala Garden, Odaipatti — in the heart of Theni's Cumbum valley, home to the GI-tagged Panneer Thratchai grape. What was once fresh grapes sold at market price is now something more deliberate: grapes grown, harvested and solar-dried on the same land, under our own name.
"MM" carries our family — Manavalan, Manimekala. "Rooted" is where we started and what we won't compromise on. "Ventures" is everything this farm is becoming: a food brand, a processing service for other farmers, and a digital platform we call AgroFlow.
The Panneer grape has grown in the Cumbum valley for generations. My grandfather planted the first vines here over 40 years ago; today the variety covers nearly 85% of Tamil Nadu's grape-growing land. What makes ours different: the seeds are soft enough to eat, dried whole — proof there's nothing added to strip them out.

What makes Panneer grapes different from regular raisins?
Panneer (Cumbum Panneer Thratchai) is a GI-tagged grape variety grown around the Cumbum valley in Theni district. Our dry grapes are seeded, naturally sun-dried with no added sulphur, and have a distinct crunchy-sweet character unlike regular imported raisins.
Where are MM Rooted Ventures products made?
All our grapes are grown and processed on our own family farm at Odaipatti, Theni, Tamil Nadu, using solar drying — no chemical dehydration.
Does MM Rooted Ventures offer processing services to other farmers?
Yes. Through our solar drying processing service, we help farmers and MSMEs dehydrate fruits, vegetables and flowers into dried products, powders or malts, including white-label processing.
Is MM Rooted Ventures FSSAI certified?
Our FSSAI registration is currently in progress with the Tamil Nadu Food Safety authority. We're a registered MSME (UDYAM-TN-23-0071026) and will update this page the moment the FSSAI certificate is issued.

GI Tag
What Makes Cumbum Panneer Grapes GI-Tagged?
MM Rooted Ventures Journal
In short: The Panneer Thratchai grape grown in the Cumbum valley of Theni district, Tamil Nadu, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2023. A GI tag is a legal certification that a product's unique qualities come specifically from where it's grown — the same protection given to Darjeeling tea or Alphonso mangoes.
What is a GI tag, exactly?
A Geographical Indication tag, granted in India under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, certifies that a product's character, reputation or quality is essentially linked to its place of origin. Once granted, only producers within that defined geographic region can legally market their product under that GI name.
Why Cumbum's Panneer grape earned one
The Cumbum valley's specific combination of soil, elevation and climate produces a grape with a distinct thin skin, seeded structure and a naturally sweet-tart flavour that doesn't replicate elsewhere in India. Farmers in this valley have cultivated the variety for generations, and the GI tag formally recognises that heritage.
What it means for you as a buyer
When a product is genuinely labelled with the GI-tagged Panneer variety, you're getting grapes grown within a legally defined region known for this specific character — not a generic raisin relabelled with a regional name. At MM Rooted Ventures, our grapes are grown on our own farm at Odaipatti, inside the GI zone, and dried the same way for generations: in the sun, seeds intact, nothing added.
The short answer
Panneer Thratchai is a GI-tagged grape variety from Theni's Cumbum valley, protected since 2023 for its distinct seeded, naturally sweet character — and it's the only grape we grow.
Food Science
Sulphured vs. Unsulphured Raisins: What's the Difference?
MM Rooted Ventures Journal
In short: Most commercial raisins are treated with sulphur dioxide (SO₂) during drying to preserve colour and extend shelf life. Our grapes are not — they're sun-dried naturally, which changes their colour, texture and how your body processes them.
Why sulphur is used commercially
Sulphur dioxide is a preservative and anti-browning agent. Treating grapes with it before drying keeps them golden or light brown instead of darkening, slows mould growth, and extends shelf life significantly — useful for large-scale, long-distance commercial raisin production.
What happens without it
Grapes dried without sulphur naturally oxidise and darken as they lose moisture in the sun — which is why our Black Panneer Seeded Dry Grapes are dark, almost black, rather than golden. The trade-off is a shorter shelf life and more variation batch to batch, in exchange for no added chemical residue.
Does sulphur matter for health?
Sulphites are permitted food additives within regulatory limits, but some people are sensitive to them — particularly those with asthma or sulphite sensitivity, who can react to residual SO₂ in dried fruit. Choosing unsulphured dried fruit removes this variable entirely.
The short answer
Sulphur-treated raisins stay light-coloured and last longer on a shelf; naturally sun-dried grapes like ours darken, taste different, and carry no added sulphur — a deliberate trade-off we make for a more natural product.
Our Process
How Solar Drying Preserves More Than Chemical Dehydration
MM Rooted Ventures Journal
In short: We dry our grapes the slow way — laid out under the sun on our own farm — rather than using sulphur fumigation or industrial mechanical dehydrators. It takes longer, but it's how Panneer grapes have traditionally been dried in Theni for generations.
Three ways to dry a grape
Commercially, grapes are dried in one of three ways: open sun-drying (traditional, slow, weather-dependent), sulphur-fumigated drying (faster, preserves colour, adds SO₂ residue), or mechanical hot-air dehydration (fast, energy-intensive, can degrade heat-sensitive nutrients at high temperatures).
Why we chose solar
Solar drying — using direct and indirect sunlight, sometimes assisted by a solar dryer structure to protect against dust and pests — lets moisture leave the grape gradually at ambient-to-moderate temperatures. This slower process is gentler on the fruit's natural sugars and antioxidants compared to high-heat mechanical drying, and requires no sulphur or chemical inputs at any stage.
The trade-offs, honestly
Solar drying takes days longer than industrial methods and is more exposed to weather variability, which is part of why we're building a dedicated 1,100 sq ft solar drying unit on our farm — to make the process more consistent and hygienic without giving up the sun-drying method itself.
The short answer
Solar drying is slower and weather-dependent, but it needs no sulphur or high heat — which is why we've stuck with it, and why we're investing in better solar infrastructure rather than switching to mechanical dehydration.
